The Seven Characteristics of Youth Work

Educational Practice
Youth workers are educators who engage with young people in diverse settings. They use different activities and methods to educate. They build and sustain open relationship to create a learning environment for all.Youth workers "purposefully intervene" in young people's lives, creating conversations that will enable young people to think creatively, freely, and create activities and opportunities that will help them to think differently in their social and personal lives. In my experience, I have tried to re-create ideas that would help children of all ages I was working with to learn the lesson effectively that was being taught.

Social Practice
Youth workers work with existing groups to help young people associate with their peers. Social practice is also creating or finding activities that young people will be able to relate to and use effectively in their social life.

Challenges Inequality
It is to address power imbalances as a youth worker rather than to avoid unlawful discrimination. Youth workers are there to make a loving community, making sure that the is equal opportunities for all and bring everyone together as a whole community.

Young People Choose to be Involved
Young people would rather be involve with youth work related than participating because they are compelled to. Youth workers are to make a distinct and positive contribution in young people leaning environment by combing youth work and informal education in a creative way that will encourage young people to participate freely rather than feeling compelled.

Strengthens The Voices of Youth/Influence
The purpose of encouraging and influencing young people to "influence the environment in which they live" is to set a foundation for them for tomorrow. It is very important as youth workers to positively build young people and educate them that their strength and voice matter. By doing so, youth workers will help take the young people out of the mindset that they are limited in thinking and power.

Welfare Practice
Youth workers create an environment that enables young people of all ages and ethnic groups to equally engage in activities without depriving any young individual. Youth workers promote inclusion and practice the welfare and safety of all young people.

Holistic
Youths have many questions and are still learning their environment, and surroundings. That is why youth workers carefully teach young people the best and safe way to learn from their mistakes and about who they are as an individual and their value to society. Youth workers are said to be a fixer in young people's lives. However, youth workers do not only help fix, they also work along with young people in building them up for a better tomorrow.
